What are Forest schools?
Forest Schools is an innovative approach to education where a child or adult has the opportunity to achieve and develop confidence through hands-on learning in a woodland environment. Forest Schools is a nationally recognised approach to education that has been gathering popularity over the past 15 years. Forest Schools uses the natural resources in the woodland and aims to stimulate creative, imaginative activities. It focuses on developing the whole person, leading to increased confidence, self-esteem and motivation. It involves repeated, regular visits to the woodland classroom throughout the year, in any weather! In an age when many children have few opportunities to be outdoors, it offers them a way to experience a full and enhanced curriculum in a woodland habitat. What are the benefits of Forest Schools? Forest Schools are fun. They focus on self-guided learning and play. They allow students to: -
The sessions are structured, but at the same time allow the individual time and space to explore the woodland in a safe environment. Participants can climb trees, build shelters, cook over a fire, whittle sticks, investigate , leap in puddles and have fun while learning. Each session follows the children’s interests and encourages personalised learning and is flexible to their needs. Participants develop healthy bodies, improved social skills, increased confidence and self-esteem and a love of the natural world. Forest Schools can be tailored to suit all ages and abilities.
